Decoding Energy Efficiency Labels for Kitchen Appliances: Tips for Energy-Saving Purchases and Usage

The new GB21456-2024 standard, effective September 2025, integrates household induction cookers, rice cookers, and microwave ovens into a unified energy efficiency management system. The energy efficiency levels are divided into three grades, with Grade 1 being the most energy-efficient. Induction cooker energy efficiency labels must indicate key parameters such as thermal efficiency and standby power. For Grade 1 models, thermal efficiency must be ≥68%, and standby power must be ≤2W. Rice cookers, on the other hand, are evaluated based on their保温 (keeping-warm) energy consumption; Grade 1 models must consume no more than 0.3 kilowatt-hours of electricity over 24 hours when keeping food warm.

When choosing energy-efficient kitchen appliances, avoid falling into “parameter traps”: For range hoods, higher air volume does not necessarily mean greater energy efficiency; Level-1 energy-efficiency products must also ensure a total pressure efficiency of at least 23%. After meeting the thermal efficiency standards for gas stoves, pay attention to the burner design—using a concentric ring structure can save more than 15% in energy. Equally important are energy-saving tips for daily use: When using an induction cooktop, select appropriate cookware—the closer the bottom of the pot fits the cooktop surface, the higher the energy efficiency; when cooking rice in an electric rice cooker, soak the rice for 15 minutes before cooking to save 20% on electricity; and when heating food in a microwave oven, cover the food to reduce moisture evaporation and improve heating efficiency. 
The registration information for energy efficiency labels can be found on the official website of the National Energy Efficiency Labeling Management Center. Simply enter the product model number to verify its authenticity. Typically, the energy consumption of older kitchen appliances is more than 50% higher than that of new models. For gas stoves used for over 8 years and electric water heaters used for over 10 years, it’s recommended to replace them promptly to ensure both energy savings and safety.
